Family Workshops

Family Workshop classes are designed to help families discover the wonders of the natural world- together!  Classes will typically combine a lesson with crafts, activities, trips into the zoo, and animals encounters, and are appropriate for various ages. These classes are not a drop-off program. There must be at least one adult for every two children who attend. 

Program length: 1.5 hours
Program times: 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Program prices: Members - $5 (per participant); Non-members - $10 (per participant)

November 18: Practice Makes Perfect

Practice really does make perfect! Join us as we learn all about the training programs we have for our animals here at the zoo. Don’t worry, there won’t be any flaming hoops or balancing balls! This class will include a live training session with an animal out in the zoo, as well as an in class animal visit.

December 16: Zoo Toy Shop

You are not the only one who likes to play with toys, the animals at the zoo love to play too! During this class, we will talk all about the ways we make sure the animals here are having fun. We will build fun items for our animal friends, and get to meet a special classroom visitor.

January 20: Animal Artists

Grab your easel and join us for this fun class all about animal art! During this class, we are going to make our very animal paintings, and may even get to see a zoo animal try their paws with a brush!

February 24 : Prehistoric Parents

What do you call a blind dinosaur? A do-you-think-he-saw-us! During this class, we are going to find and excavate fossils, hatch a dinosaur egg, and meet an animal who is a dino-cousin.

March 17: Specifically Snakes

Thisssss class is all about snakes. Participants will learn how to identify the venomous and non-venemous snakes most commonly found in South Carolina, as well as meet a few slithery friends.

April 14: Neighborhood Naturalists

Do you love to explore your backyard? Have you always wanted to know the names of the plants and animals that you see? This class is for you! During this class, we will learn basic plant and animal identification using leaves, tracks, and sounds. We will also get to meet some animal friends who are from right here in South Carolina.

May 12: Constellation Creatures

This class will shoot for the stars! Participants will learn to identify constellations, hear the stories behind them, and meet some of the real life animals that inspired the naming of the stars.
