Chuma lives at the Greenville Zoo with his brother Saied
The African Lion is a majestic animal that is the only cat to live socially in prides. The female lions do most of the hunting
in the wild, working as a team to flush out and ambush prey. Once the prey is captured, the males eat first. An alliance
of two or more males will have more success in staving off takeover attempts by other males. The lion population
in Africa has been reduced by half since the early 1950s. Today, fewer than 21,000 remain in all of Africa.
Fun Facts:
- Chuma and Saied were born at Riverbanks Zoo, Columbia SC in 2008.
- Big cats such as the African Lion roar but cannot purr.
- Both Chuma and Saied’s favorite "toy" is a big rubber ball attached to two strong springs.
- They both enjoy interaction with their keepers.
