Orangutans, which are found in the tropical rainforests of Borneo and northern Sumatra, live to be about 30 in the wild and about 50 in captivity.

Fun Facts

  • The Greenville Zoo has three Sumatran orangutans: Lana (female), Kumar (male) and their female baby, who was born on August 7, 2018.
  • In 2017, Kumar turned 12 and Lana turned 32.
  • When orangutans climb, they always have three points of contact.
  • Considered one of the world's 25 most endangered primates, Sumatran oragutans are found only on the island of Sumatra.
