[ARCHIVED] The Greenville Zoo Mourns the Loss of “Selma” the Spider Monkey.

Selma

It is with profound sadness that the Greenville Zoo announces the passing of Selma, one of Zoo’s Spider monkeys. Selma was 47 years old. She was a cancer survivor and one of the oldest known Spider monkeys. Selma died of age-related natural causes.

Selma came to the Greenville Zoo on December 1, 2003. Not only was she a fantastic ambassador for her species, but she is a testament to the value of zoos and their importance to wildlife.

Selma was a favorite of zoo staff members and guests, as she welcomed them when they were near her exhibit, coming over and greeting them with little squeaks.

The Zoo is home to two other Spider monkeys, Jasmine (Selma’s granddaughter) and Mojo.
