[ARCHIVED] February 18, 2022: Happy Birthday Anastasia and Jasper!

Amur Leopard

On February 10, the Greenville Zoo’s Amur leopards, Anastasia and Jasper, celebrated their 2nd birthday! Their mother, Jade, was more than happy to celebrate her ‘birthing day’ alongside them. Amur leopards are one of the rarest cat species with only 100 individuals left in the wild and are listed as critically endangered. Every Amur leopard is incredibly important to the survival of their species.

ValentinesThis Valentine’s Day, the Greenville Zoo education department participated in a Streamable Learning presentation on animal courtship aptly called “Wooing in the Wilderness.” This program featured the many bizarre courtship behaviors animals perform in order to find a valentine in the wild. For more information on our distance learning programs please call the education department at 864-467-4850.

Striped RabbitThe Greenville Zoo Conservation Grant supports conservation efforts around the world. Grant recipient, The Nature Conservation Agency of Bengkulu Province, reported the first successful release of a Sumatran striped rabbit back into the wild in Indonesia. The rabbits were first discovered by locals in the Rejang Lebong district and brought to The Nature Conservation Agency of Bengkulu Province once discovering they were a protected species. After four months of quarantine, the rabbits were released back into the wild. This initiative is the first success story of conservation actions conducted by a government authority for Sumatran striped rabbits in Indonesia.

Cub ScoutsThe Pickens Boy Scouts of America Cub Scout Pack #51 had a special presentation on extinct and endangered wildlife. The scouts learned what natural resources are, why it's important to protect and conserve them, how different species become endangered, and what is being done to save them.

OrangutanThe 2022 Super Bowl was the hot topic among the animals at the zoo. The Greenville Zoo’s Sumatran Male Kumar predicted that the Los Angeles Rams would win the game. With several bananas on the line, he was relieved with the results of Sunday Night’s game. However, the ocelots were disappointed that their feline friends, the Cincinnati Bengals, lost by such a narrow margin. There’s always next year!
