Greenville Zoo Administrator Jeff Bullock announced today that the Angolan colobus monkey born on February 16 has passed away. According to Bullock, until a necropsy is performed and test results returned, it is impossible to say what caused the sudden death. For now, zoo keepers are closely monitoring the baby’s mother for signs of depression and will ensure that she has everything she needs as she goes through the grief process.
“While we won’t know anything definitive until the test results come back, because this was Nuru’s first baby, there is always the possibility that there was some type of congenital condition that we couldn’t detect based on observations,” said Bullock. “This is a sad time for the zoo family, and we know our guests who shared in the excitement of the baby’s birth, will also share in our grief.”
The baby was the offspring of Valentino (male) and Nuru (female), whose pairing was a Species Survival Plan recommendation last summer.
